New York City Hall
City Hall Park, New York, NY, New York City, New York, United States, 10007
New York City Hall is the seat of New York City government, located at the center of City Hall Park in the Civic Center area of Lower Manhattan. Constructed from 1803 to 1812 by architects Joseph Francois Mangin and John McComb Jr., it is the oldest city hall in the United States that still houses its original governmental functions. The building is a National Historic Landmark and designated New York City Landmark, featuring Federal-style architecture with a magnificent rotunda containing a grand marble stairway and ten fluted Corinthian columns supporting a coffered dome. The rotunda has historically served as the site of municipal and national events, including lying in state ceremonies for Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. The building houses the office of the Mayor of New York City and the chambers of the New York City Council. While primarily serving governmental functions, City Hall offers regular guided tours of portions of the building including the Council Chambers and Governor's Room, which houses part of the City Hall Portrait Collection and historic furnishings. The facility provides limited public access through scheduled tours and specific business appointments, with security screening required for all visitors. The building underwent major restoration from 2008 with structural enhancements and interior restoration work. City Hall serves as an important civic and historical landmark in Lower Manhattan, representing over two centuries of New York City government operations.
