India International Nuclear Medicine Tech refers to the growing field of using radioactive substances for medical diagnosis and treatment in India, involving specialized tech like PET-CT, advanced imaging, and trained technologists for roles in hospitals and research, with institutions like INMAS (DRDO) and universities (Manipal, Mody) offering training, all regulated by bodies like AERB, driving significant growth in India's healthcare sector.
Event Highlights
Theranostics and Precision Oncology: A major focus is the integration of diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) approaches, particularly in cancer care. This includes the use of indigenous Lutetium-177 (¹⁷⁷Lu)-based therapies for prostate and neuroendocrine tumors, which has made these advanced treatments more affordable and accessible in India.
Hybrid Imaging Technology: Advancements in hybrid imaging systems like integrated PET/CT, SPECT/CT, and the introduction of PET/MR scanners (including India's first simultaneous PET-MR at NIMHANS, Bengaluru) provide more precise anatomical and functional information for diagnosis and treatment planning.
Indigenous Production of Radioisotopes: India has made significant strides in becoming self-reliant in the production of medically useful radioisotopes.
The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and the Board of Radiation Isotopes and Technology (BRIT) use nuclear reactors (like the upgraded APSARA-U) and cyclotrons to produce isotopes like ¹³¹I, ⁹⁹Mo, and ¹⁷⁷Lu.
A Fission Moly Plant is being commissioned to produce high-specific activity ⁹⁹Mo, reducing import dependency.
