About This Event

The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of the most spectacular and sacred Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, held annually in the historic city of Kandy. This grand cultural pageant honors the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha and features a majestic procession of elephants, traditional dancers, drummers, fire performers, and torchbearers. The festival includes whip crackers, beautifully attired dancers, jugglers, musicians, fire-breathers and various cultural performances. The elephants participate adorned with lavish garments, with the largest elephant carrying the casket containing the Tooth Relic. This sacred celebration preserves the values, rituals, and artistry that have defined Kandy as a spiritual and cultural capital for generations.
