Neelgar, founded in 2005 by designer Kamaldeep Kaur and based in Ahmedabad, India, is a textile brand that fuses tradition with innovation to create timeless, sustainable handcrafted products including silk, scarves, stoles, saris, shawls, and yardage. The brand specializes in Bandhani, a traditional tying and dyeing technique, and traces its origins to Kaur's encounter with the Neelgar community in Jaipur, known for its expertise in indigo dyeing, which earned her the nickname 'NeelKamal.' For its first decade, Neelgar focused exclusively on natural dyes, developing various shades of indigo across different textile techniques before expanding into broader design work. Kaur, who studied fashion in Delhi and later worked with designer J.J. Valaya and the craft organization GURJARI, founded Neelgar to create a market for traditional Indian crafts among younger generations, emphasizing fair trade, women's empowerment, sustainability, and creative innovation. She has represented India in more than 25 countries, participating in prestigious international events such as the Cheongju International Craft Biennial and Messe Kunst und Handwerk.
