About Saskatoon Open Door Society
Saskatoon Open Door Society, established in 1981 to assist refugees from Vietnam settling in Saskatoon, has spent more than 45 years supporting newcomers and building a more welcoming community in Saskatchewan. The organization's mission centers on welcoming and assisting refugees and immigrants in becoming informed and effective participants in Canadian society, while involving the broader Saskatoon community in their hospitable reception and acceptance. Over the decades, the Open Door has assisted immigrants and refugees from countries spanning Laos, Poland, Bosnia, Sudan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, India, China, and Ukraine, among many others, taking a holistic approach to service delivery across settlement and integration, language training, and employment services. The organization's programming includes the Newcomer Skills Training Centre, an Employer Connections Program with an annual Diversity Awards Gala and WEConnect Job Fairs, Individual Case and Career Management Services, and Community Engagement Programming covering community events, community gardens, Indigenous-newcomer connections, leadership programs, and seniors programs. Saskatoon Open Door Society also operates a daycare program and language training facility, providing a nurturing environment for children of newcomer families while their parents pursue settlement, education, and employment goals.
