American Academy of Pediatrics

American Academy of Pediatrics is the largest professional association of pediatricians in the United States, founded in 1930 by 35 pediatricians to serve as an independent forum to address children's health needs. The organization was established during the Great Depression when the idea that children had unique developmental and health needs was revolutionary, as practices now considered standard preventive care such as immunizations and regular health exams were only beginning to change the custom of treating children as miniature adults. The Academy has grown from its founding membership of 35 to over 67,000 members today, including pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists, and pediatric surgical specialists across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and many other countries. The AAP organizes numerous educational conferences and exhibitions throughout the year, with their flagship event being the annual National Conference and Exhibition which features over 350 educational sessions, hands-on learning opportunities, and the largest pediatric technology exhibit of its kind. The organization serves as the leading advocacy voice for children's health and well-being, publishing hundreds of policy statements and clinical reports, operating the world's largest pediatric publishing program with over 300 consumer titles and 500 professional titles, and maintaining prestigious publications including the flagship journal Pediatrics and AAP News magazine. The Academy runs extensive continuing medical education programs, operates through 18 councils and 51 sections with combined membership exceeding 84,000, and maintains headquarters in Itasca, Illinois with a satellite office in Washington, D.C. for advocacy efforts.
