American Association of Critical-Care Nurses is the world's largest specialty nursing organization, founded in 1969 by three nurse pioneers Mrs. Norma Shepard, Penny Vaughan and Vee Rice who gathered at a kitchen table and shared a vision to create a better future for patients. Originally established as the American Association of Cardiovascular Nurses to help educate nurses working in newly developed ICUs, AACN changed its name in 1971 to reflect the diverse complexities of patients who are acutely or critically ill. The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit association that serves more than 500,000 acute and critical care nurses worldwide through over 200 chapters in the United States.
