About American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) was formed in 2013 through the merger of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (founded 1985) and the American College of Nurse Practitioners (founded 1995). It is the largest national professional membership organization for nurse practitioners in the United States, representing the interests of well over 350,000 licensed NPs across all clinical specialties. AANP's stated mission is to empower nurse practitioners to advance accessible, person-centered, equitable, and high-quality health care through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership. The organization advocates at local, state, and federal levels for recognition of nurse practitioners as providers of cost-effective, high-quality care, and it has taken legal action in support of expanding NP practice authority. AANP also operates a separately incorporated certification body, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), which handles NP certification and recertification independently of the association's advocacy and membership functions.
