About American Occupational Therapy Association
American Occupational Therapy Association is the national professional association established in 1917 to represent the interests and concerns of occupational therapy practitioners and students of occupational therapy and to improve the quality of occupational therapy services. Originally founded as the National Society for the Promotion of Occupational Therapy at Consolation House, Clifton Springs, New York in March 1917, the organization changed its name to the American Occupational Therapy Association in 1921. AOTA represents the professional interests and concerns of more than 213,000 occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and students nationwide, with members residing in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and internationally. The association organizes the annual AOTA INSPIRE conference and expo, which is the largest gathering of occupational therapy professionals in the world, featuring educational sessions, networking opportunities, and an exhibition hall. AOTA's major programs and activities are directed toward assuring the quality of occupational therapy services, improving consumer access to health care services, and promoting the professional development of members. The organization educates the public and advances the profession by providing resources, setting standards, and serving as an advocate to improve health care. AOTA also publishes the American Journal of Occupational Therapy and offers continuing education opportunities, certification programs, and advocacy initiatives to support the occupational therapy profession.
