About American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP)
American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) is the world's oldest professional safety society, founded in 1911 in the wake of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that killed 146 garment workers. The organization serves as a global association of occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals who manage, supervise, research and consult on work-related OSH concerns across all industries. ASSP has grown from its founding to become a leading organization with more than 36,000 members worldwide, representing diverse voices across age, gender and ethnicity from over 75 countries. The organization operates through 151 local chapters, 40 sections and 65 student sections located across 75 countries, with members living in regions including the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia. ASSP organizes its flagship annual Safety Professional Development Conference and Exposition, which in 2026 marks its 65th year and is recognized as an award-winning trade show that has earned national recognition from Trade Show Executive as a Fastest 50 recipient for growth in exhibit space. The organization offers continuing education to OSH professionals, participates in developing industry standards, pursues initiatives that build the reputation of the OSH profession, and provides access to various member communities. ASSP has specialty communities focusing on particular industries including academia, construction, consulting, engineering, environment, ergonomics, fire protection, healthcare, industrial hygiene, international, management, manufacturing, oil, gas, mining and minerals, public sector, risk management/insurance and transportation. The organization maintains alliances with federal agencies such as OSHA and NIOSH, works with ABET to develop accreditation standards for OSH-related degree programs, and serves as secretariat for several ANSI committees. ASSP also operates the ASSP Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that generates funding and provides resources for research opportunities, educational advancement and leadership development to advance the OSH profession.
