Foundation for Anime and Niche Subcultures

Foundation for Anime and Niche Subcultures is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1994 that stimulates interest in, creates awareness of, and fosters the development of an appreciation for Asian culture and media as well as various underrepresented subcultures. The organization operates under the motto By Fans, For Fans and has been organizing cultural events for over three decades. The foundation is best known for organizing FanimeCon, Northern California's largest anime and Japanese culture convention, which takes place annually over Memorial Day weekend in San Jose, California. FanimeCon has grown from its humble beginnings in 1994 with 200 attendees at California State University Hayward to become a major cultural event attracting approximately 25,000 to 34,000 attendees annually at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. The foundation also organizes Clockwork Alchemy, Northern California's premiere steampunk event, which celebrates Victorian-era science fiction, fantasy, and alternative history culture. Both events feature extensive programming including video screenings, cosplay masquerades, gaming tournaments, artist exhibits, music performances, guest panels, vendor halls, and educational workshops. The organization works with international and local actors, musicians, performers, and cultural ambassadors to provide authentic cultural experiences. The foundation maintains partnerships with organizations like the Japanese Consulate and supports charitable causes including Make-A-Wish Foundation. As a volunteer-run organization, the foundation provides opportunities for community engagement and cultural education while maintaining its commitment to celebrating and preserving Asian culture and underrepresented subcultures in the Bay Area and beyond.
