About Independent Electrical Contractors
The Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC), founded in 1957, is a national trade association for merit shop electrical and systems contractors, with its national office located in Nashville, Tennessee. IEC operates as a nonprofit trade association federation with dozens of educational campuses and affiliate local chapters across the United States, representing thousands of member businesses and educating thousands of electricians and systems professionals each year through apprenticeship and training programs. The organization's apprenticeship curriculum, developed in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship, is divided into four one-year courses combining a minimum of 144 classroom hours per year with at least 2,000 hours of on-the-job training, overseen by the IEC National Apprenticeship and Training Committee. IEC member contractor companies are collectively responsible for billions of dollars in gross revenue annually and include some of the premier firms in the electrical and systems contracting industry. The association advocates for a competitive, merit-based business environment for independent electrical contractors and provides ongoing resources on safety, codes and standards, and workforce development for its member chapters nationwide.
