The International Astronomical Union (IAU), founded in 1919, is an international non-governmental organization promoting and safeguarding the science of astronomy through international cooperation. It has 85 national members and 12,734 individual members across 90 countries. The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (DNVA), founded in 1857, is responsible for awarding the Abel Prize and the Kavli Prize.
