NACHA - The Electronic Payments Association is a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1974 that governs the thriving ACH Network, the payment system that drives safe, smart, and fast Direct Deposits and Direct Payments with the capability to reach all U.S. bank and credit union accounts. Originally known as the National Automated Clearinghouse Association, NACHA manages the development, administration, and governance of the ACH Network, which serves as the backbone for the electronic movement of money and data in the United States. The organization represents more than 9,000 financial institutions through direct memberships and a network of regional payments associations. NACHA develops and administers the Nacha Operating Rules for ACH payments, which define the roles and responsibilities of ACH Network participants. The organization provides education, accreditation, and advisory services to the payments industry, including the Smarter Faster Payments annual conference, The Payments Institute educational programs, and professional accreditation programs such as the Accredited ACH Professional (AAP) and Accredited Payments Risk Professional (APRP). NACHA also offers consulting services, risk management tools, and develops standards for electronic payments including healthcare Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT). The ACH Network handled 35.2 billion payments in 2025 valued at $93 trillion, making it one of the largest, safest, and most reliable payment systems in the world. Through problem-solving and consensus-building among diverse payment industry stakeholders, NACHA advances innovation and interoperability in the payments system while maintaining its mission to enhance and enable electronic payments and financial data exchange within the U.S. and across geographies.
