About SPIE
SPIE is an international not-for-profit professional society for optics and photonics technology, founded in 1955. Originally established as the Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers, the organization later became the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers before adopting its current name SPIE in 2007. The society organizes technical conferences, trade exhibitions, and continuing education programs for researchers and developers in the light-based fields of physics, including optics, photonics, and imaging engineering. SPIE publishes peer-reviewed scientific journals, conference proceedings, monographs, tutorial texts, field guides, and reference volumes in print and online. The organization is especially well-known for Photonics West, one of the laser and photonics industry's largest combined conferences and tradeshows held annually in San Francisco. SPIE moved its headquarters from Los Angeles, California to Bellingham, Washington in 1977, establishing its current headquarters campus at 1000 20th Street in 1983. The society is affiliated with over 140 meetings and events each year worldwide, serving a global membership of over 25,000 engineers, scientists, students, and business professionals. Over the past five years, SPIE has invested more than $26 million in the international optics community through advocacy and support, including scholarships, educational resources, travel grants, endowed gifts, and public-policy development. The organization operates from its international headquarters in Bellingham, Washington, with additional offices in Cardiff, Wales and other locations globally.
