Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) is a 14.5-hectare (35.8-acre) historical landmark on Lagos Island, Nigeria, symbolizing national independence and unity. Built in 1972 on the site of the former colonial horse racing track, it hosts major events, concerts, and contains 375 shops, offices, and monuments like the Independence House. Historical Significance Independence Venue: On October 1, 1960, Nigeria's independence was celebrated here, including the lowering of the Union Jack. Renaming: Named after Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria's first Prime Minister, to honor his role in the nation's freedom. Former Use: Formerly known as the "Lagos Race Course," it was a colonial-era sports field.
