About IES San Francisco Section
IES San Francisco Section is the San Francisco Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society, established in 1907 as one of the earliest local chapters of the national IES organization. The organization has a rich history spanning over 119 years, beginning when a meeting was held on May 3, 1907, amid San Francisco's ruins following the 1906 earthquake and fire, at the temporary office of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company to consider forming a local Chapter. The section was elevated to full Section status by the Society Council in 1936 when membership reached 69. IES San Francisco Section serves as the primary Bay Area organization providing educational programs and events for professional development and networking focused on lighting for the built environment. The organization seeks to bring a broader understanding of best practices, technology, and design in lighting to designers, specifiers, architects, engineers, owners and builders throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. The section organizes various events throughout the year including their flagship Light! Design Expo, which showcases the latest in architectural lighting products and is recognized as the only architectural lighting products show in Northern California. Other regular events include the IES Lux Awards and Banquet celebrating excellence in lighting design, educational seminars and courses, the annual Pasta Party, and the Tom Tolen Golf Tournament scholarship fundraiser. The organization partners closely with industry organizations including AIA, IIDA, IALD, BOMA, ASID, ASLA, and ASHRAE to provide comprehensive educational opportunities and networking events for the lighting and design community.
